I just read an article on Mashable that MySpace is set to cut 30% of it's staff today and it's ad deal with Google, which expires next year, is unlikely to be renewed at the current rate. To be honest I like MySpace, but I don't really use it anymore. I'm one of the hordes who migrated to Facebook, Twitter, FriendFeed, et al. for no other reason than that's where my friends went. However, MySpace still averages 60 million unique visitors a month and MySpace Music is still the place to go for band music and info. It's not until you compare MySpace to Facebook and Twitter do you start asking if, as the article I referred to above states, Is The End Nigh? Middle english grammar aside, it's a question a lot of people are asking, so I thought I'd do MySpace a favor and give them my unsolicited, unsponsored, and most likely, unread suggestion on what they should do and who they should be...simply again, because I like MySpace.
I would like to see MySpace revert back to what they originally intended to be "my space." My space on the Web where I interact with friends, family, celebrities, bands, politicians, etc., only now that space includes Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Pandora, RSS, TypePad, Gmail, and whatever pops up tomorrow. Why not make it a social media portal where I can consolidate the 15 tabs, windows and 3rd party applications I have open at any given time just to keep up with my life online? We've got open API's and sites like Ping.fm and FriendFeed that are scratching the surface, but nobodies actually doing it. So that's it, and they don't even have to change their name.
Hey I said I'd offer MySpace a suggestion, and I understand there's the business of the revenue model, infrastructure and existing customers...if they want my "suggestions" on those topics, word on the street is that there's some office space available.
